Regine Velasquez is a Filipino singer, record producer, actress, TV host, stage director, model and fashion designer. She is known as the Asia’s Songbird upon becoming champion in the 1989 Asia Pacific Singing Contest in Hong Kong, China. From then on she became one of the most prominent Filipino singers in the industry, and has since been a great influence in the rise of present and aspiring entertainers in the world of Filipino music.
Regine Velasquez first displayed her singing prowess by competing in local singing contests in the places she lived in. At fourteen she then joined the singing contest Ang Bagong Kampeon (The New Champ) hosted by the late veteran host Bert Marcelo and singer Pilita Corrales, in which she became the show’s first grand champion.
She then took on a singing career with the single “Love Me Again,” but it soon became a flop. Not discouraged, Regine Velasquez continued to look for more work exposure, first by joining the hosts of the late night entertainment show Penthouse Live.
Her biggest break came in 1989, when she was chosen to represent her country in the Asia Pacific Singing Contest, in which she finished off as the champion, defeating contestants from several countries, and became known as the Asia’s Songbird.
Regine Velasquez then worked with various renowned local and foreign songwriters and composers, ranging from Jose Mari Chan, Gary Valenciano, Jim Brickman, Louie Ocampo and Ryan Cayabyab. In 1991, she became the first Filipino to do a solo performance at the Main Hall of Carnegie Hall as part of Carnegie Hall’s centennial concert series.
During the course of her glorious career Regine Velasquez has collaborated with various foreign artists, such as Jacky Cheung, Paul Anka, David Hasselfoff, 98 Degrees, Brian McKnight, Stephen Bishop, Ronan Keating, Mandy Moore, Peabo Bryson, Dave Koz, Jeffrey Osborne, Coco Lee, David Pomeranz, Eduardo Capetillo, Fernando Carrillo, Michel Legrand and Billy Crawford.
As an actress, Regine Velasquez has starred in a number of romantic comedies alongside veteran actors such as Christopher de Leon, Eddie Garcia, and Robin Padilla. She also did primetime drama series together with actor Richard Gomez, and won a Best Actress award for her role as a mentally challenged woman opposite actor Piolo Pascual.
At present, Regine Velasquez is hosting a weekend variety show, SOP, and a reality singing contest which is considered to be the ticket to stardom for most of the aspiring young Filipino singers who want to make it big in the industry. She also has her own record label, IndiMusic, in partnership with Universal Records.
